We are seeking a Lead Firmware Engineer to architect and develop the next generation of embedded firmware for connected, microcontroller-based IoT products.

This is a hands-on technical leadership role for an engineer who enjoys designing elegant firmware architectures, solving challenging embedded problems, and working closely with hardware throughout the entire product lifecycle—from board bring-up through production.
Success in this role requires someone who values simple, maintainable designs, embraces modern embedded development practices, and enjoys owning technical architecture while remaining actively involved in development.

Job Responsibilities

  • Lead the architecture and development of embedded firmware for microcontroller-based IoT devices.
  • Design maintainable, event-driven firmware using Finite State Machine (FSM) architecture and modern embedded software design principles.
  • Develop high-quality embedded software using modern C++.
  • Own firmware architecture decisions while maintaining a hands-on development role.
  • Bring new hardware platforms to life through board bring-up, driver development, hardware/software integration, and system debugging.
  • Develop firmware for real-time embedded systems running RTOS environments.
  • Collaborate closely with electrical, hardware, and product engineering teams throughout product development.
  • Review firmware architecture and code while mentoring other engineers on embedded best practices.
  • Continuously simplify and improve firmware architecture to maximize reliability, readability, and long-term maintainability.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • 8+ years of embedded firmware development experience.
  • Strong modern C++ development experience in embedded environments.
  • Experience architecting firmware for microcontroller-based embedded systems.
  • Experience implementing Finite State Machine (FSM) or other event-driven embedded architectures.
  • Experience with embedded RTOS environments such as FreeRTOS, Zephyr, or similar.
  • Strong hardware bring-up and low-level debugging experience.
  • Experience developing device drivers and integrating hardware peripherals.
  • Strong understanding of real-time scheduling, task management, synchronization, and embedded system design.
  • Ability to balance technical leadership with hands-on firmware development.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing connected or IoT devices.
  • Experience with ARM-based microcontrollers.
  • Wireless communication experience such as BLE, Wi-Fi, cellular, or other embedded connectivity.
  • Experience with firmware update mechanisms and secure embedded systems.
  • Experience mentoring firmware engineers or leading technical projects.

What We’re Not Looking For
While we value diverse embedded backgrounds, this role is primarily focused on microcontroller-based firmware development. Candidates whose experience is primarily in the following areas may not be the best fit:

  • Embedded Linux application development
  • Semiconductor or chip design
  • Firmware verification or validation
  • High-level software development with limited embedded hardware interaction
